THE EVENT
Pratt Industries is the world's largest, privately owned paper and packaging company.  With a commitment to the environment, Pratt Industries planned a Grand Opening for its new plant in Indiana that would produce super strong, super thick cardboard from recycled paper.  Guests included a former president of the United States, state and local dignitaries, industry leaders and the CEOs of many important companies.  Jay Leno of the Tonight show hosted the evening's festivities , Paul Anka entertained, and the evening's special guest was Muhammad Ali.

EXPECTATIONS
Pratt Industries requested that we create a striking invitation for their Grand Opening with the following provisos:

  • the invitation must be made from the super thick cardboard produced by the new Indiana plant

  • the invitation had to be mailable

  • as an environmentally conscious manufacturer, Pratt forbade the use of any white or bleached paper in the invitation.

PROJECT DESIGN
The idea of creating an exciting invitation from a utilitarian piece of brown, un-yielding, and very thick cardboard that must be mailable and by its cleverness capture the attention of VIPs and increase guest attendance was a challenge our designer Gwen Ware relished.  After closely studying samples of the super thick (1/2 inch) super strong cardboard, Gwen Ware spoke with several Post Office officers to better understand postal requirements and the mechanics of the post office's mailing process as the finished invitations must arrive looking fresh.

Gwen Ware decided a double-door, flip-fold invitation design held closed by a corrugated kraft wrapper on which a kraft sticker with the guest's name and address were printed in the same font as that used for the invitation.  The invitation would be ready to mail by placing a stamp on the address label.  Once the guest slid off the wrapper, the in invitation would be opened by breaking the product information seal and flipping the two smaller panels up and out to reveal the invitation's text, as well as the RSVP card and RSVP envelope.

CHALLENGES
The challenge was found in creating an invitation design that would take advantage of the characteristics of super thick cardboard.
